On Friday 2nd June Year 5 had the opportunity of visiting the Burnavon Theatre to watch a puppet show based on our last term’s topic of The Ancient Egyptians. Children had fun watching the Ancient Egyptians come to life in the form of large puppets. We learnt the story of how the first ‘Mummy’ was created as well as many tales of the Egyptian Gods.
Year 5 enjoyed learning all about the health benefits of dairy products in a talk by the Dairy Council on Friday 5th May. We also investigated the importance of eating a balance of foods from each of the food groups and also the need for enough physical activity in our lives. Everyone then had the opportunity of taking part in some physical activity related to the topics taught.
This term Year 5 teamed up with Year 5 pupils from Holy Trinity P.S. and Phoenix P.S. for our Shared Education programme. Miss Barnes, a final year student from Stranmillis University College, has taught us lots of fun and exciting lessons. We especially loved some of the lessons on the Ancient Egyptians, such as the Mummification experiment and making maps of Egypt using salt dough. Thank you so much for all your hard work Miss Barnes. You are a great teacher!

Everyone received a fun-pack filled with fire safety activities and we were all asked to think of a Fire Escape Plan with our families so that we all know what to do in the event of a fire.

At the beginning of our topic of Area in Numeracy, we investigated how many ‘squares’ a variety of items covered. As the squares were all different sizes we all ended up with different answers. This helped us to see why we need to use a standard unit of measurement (cm squared) when measuring area.
