Year 1 Latest News
This term the Year 1 children have been learning about the seaside. They have been playing in the ice-cream parlour, the beach shop and the seaside café. They have also been exploring capacity through building sandcastles, using their imagination and writing skills to design postcards, exploring the beach through the use of the tuff tray and making boats to explore sinking and floating.
The Gruffalo Trip
During the last week of March the primary 1 classes from Cookstown Primary and Holy Trinity Primary School travelled to Parkanaur Forest Park to take part in the Gruffalo Trip. They had great fun using the maps to look for clues. They solved puzzles to find the Gruffalo and made lots of new friends. Everyone had a lovely time.
Outdoor play in Year 1
Year 1 have been enjoying play outdoors, this is a first for Years 1 and 2. The children put on their welly boots and wet suits before going outside. This was fun in itself. Activities included playing in the mud kitchen, filling pipes with water, using paintbrushes to paint the walls (with water) making music using old frying pans and wooden spoons, building with wooden blocks, filling buckets of water and splashing in the puddles. So much fun....we can't wait to get outside again and use the sandpit, ride the scooters and do some gardening.
World Book Day
We loved dressing up for World Book Day! Can you guess which characters we are???
Our new topic for this term is the farm. Through play the children have been taking on the role of the farmer and his wife in the house corner, painting farm animals, washing the farmer’s dirty clothes in the water, finding and naming the farm animals in the sand tray, developing fine motor skills through making vegetables with the playdoh, enjoying farm based jigsaws, constructing farms and using our imagination with the small world farm animals grazing in the fields. As you can see, P1 play really is fun with lots of learning.
Year 1 have been learning all about shapes. We have had great fun finding shapes around school.
Year 1 have been learning about the Arctic. The children have been doing lots of activities during Play, World Around Us and Art lessons.
We made polar bear chalk pictures, painted penguins and made igloos using different sized marshmallows.
Year 1 have been learning about bears over the past few weeks. They have been busy designing rooms for the bear house, making a cave for a bear in the sand, making bear pancakes, painting bears and practising their numeracy skills playing a bear game.
Stay and Play
Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed when their parents and family members joined them for Stay and Play.
Jack and the Beanstalk
This term the Year 1 children have had great fun learning about our topic Jack and the Beanstalk. We measured the beanstalk with our Giant feet. We planted our own beanstalks and watched them grow and we used the iPads to design our own book covers for the story.
Year 1 enjoyed learning all about number 3!
