Year 6 STEM Lesson
This month, Mr Johnston from Cookstown High School visited Mr Beggs’s class to teach them about how structures can be made stronger by using a variety of materials. Firstly, everyone had to see if they could design a structure which could support a 2 kg weight, then a 10kg weight using only strips of paper and a hardboard square. Every group was able to achieve this and also, their combined structures were able to hold the weight of Melanie, and unbelievably Mr Beggs’ (without the structure collapsing)!
Finally we had to design a structure using only straws and sellotape which had to hold an egg. The designs were amazing, and everyone learned a great deal, whilst enjoying the hands-on experience. A huge thanks to Mr Johnston for giving up his time to undertake this project.
