Year 5 Whip Up Fluffy Pancakes (and Their 3 Times Tables!)
Year 5 had a brilliant time celebrating Pancake Tuesday with a cooking session that put both their practical skills and numeracy skills to the test! Not only did they make their own pancakes from scratch, but they also had to triple the recipe, giving them the perfect opportunity to practise their 3 times tables in a real‑life context.
During the lesson, the pupils learned something special about Northern Ireland’s baking traditions. They discovered that soda bread self‑raising flour is a unique Northern Irish staple, not commonly used anywhere else. They also found out that the combination of soda bread self‑raising flour and buttermilk is the secret to creating light and fluffy pancakes.
Once the batter was mixed and the pancakes cooked, the class enjoyed choosing their toppings. Chocolate spread and blondie spread were clear favourites, making for some very happy Year 5 pupils!
It was a fantastic mix of learning, teamwork, cultural understanding, and of course delicious pancakes. Well done, Year 5!
