Year 5 Explore Equivalent Fractions

11th Feb 2026

Year 5 have been busy developing their understanding of fractions, and this week they began learning all about equivalent fractions. To help make this new concept fun and hands‑on, the pupils used play‑dough to model and compare different fractions.

By cutting and shaping the play‑dough pieces, the children discovered that:

  • One half is equivalent to two quarters
  • Three sixths is equivalent to one half
  • Two eighths is equivalent to one quarter

The class had great fun experimenting, discussing and proving their ideas using their play‑dough models. It was a fantastic way to visualise fractions and see how different parts can be equal.

Well done, Year 5 — brilliant mathematical thinking!
