Safer Internet Day in Year 5

11th Feb 2026

Yesterday, Year 5 took part in Safer Internet Day by joining the BBC’s Safer Internet Live Lesson. The session focused on one of today’s most important digital topics: the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI).

During the lesson, the children learned how AI systems are created and the importance of making thoughtful, responsible decisions when designing them. They explored ideas such as:

  • Choosing reliable, accurate and unbiased training data
  • Understanding how information fed into AI shapes its behaviour
  • Writing carefully designed prompts to help prevent unhelpful or unsafe responses

A highlight of the session was the opportunity to help program an AI chatbot, designed to simulate a conversation with a critically endangered Hooded Vulture. Through this activity, pupils discovered how AI can be used creatively to support learning about wildlife, conservation, and digital responsibility.

Year 5 showed fantastic curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the lesson. We are proud of the thoughtful discussions they had about staying safe online and the positive role responsible technology can play in our world.
