Gortatole P6 Residential Trip - Day 1

4th Mar 2026
The intrepid group of 33 P6 children and 6 of the hardiest staff, set off for Gortatole, for outdoor adventures and strenuous activities. Led ably and organised by the legendary extrovert herself: Mrs Armstrong.

Mrs Millar, Miss Morton, Mr Hamilton, Mrs McCartney and Mr Young joined the cause to bring entertainment, physical exhaustion and opportunities for children to show courage in the face of new activities!

The bus journey through the wilds of Fermanagh brought on a few green faces after 2 hours of ups and downs on the worst kept roads in the universe. Once we arrived at Gortatole, colour returned to the beaming faces of our P6s and we got acquainted with the facilities.

We then split into 4 groups and set off for an afternoon of caving, paddle sports, archery and climbing. All 4 groups get a session on each of these activities over the 3 days.

We were very proud of all the children who tried new things, participated in everything and put fear aside to be the best of the brave from Cookstown. Mrs McCartney was also observed jumping into a lake with some of the children following paddle sports, which is doubly impressive as it's March!

We finished our day with games in the sports hall including a blister inducing tournament of tug of war!

The most challenging part of the day was getting the children to put a duvet cover on, something Mr Young still finds challenging himself.

Toast and supper to end, and a great bunch of tired and happy P6s.

Cookstown PS crew, over and out.
