Gortatole P6 Residential - Day 2
5th Mar 2026
Following a well slept night with surprisingly few shenanigans, the children and staff awoke to the sound of a billion Fermanagh raindrops. The staff heading out for hill walking lamented the fact that rain in the west is definitely wetter than rain from Cookstown. However, after a hearty breakfast all children and staff were raring to go for the activities that lay ahead.
The hill walkers ventured out into the Misty Mountains of Fermanagh, similar to the Misty Mountains as described by Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings, although our mountains have less trolls apparently, although Mr Hamilton was mistaken for a troll by the children, due to his dishevelled appearance having battled the weather all the way up.
Other children tackled the climbing wall like rats up drain pipes! Miss Morton realised that fashion nails were not conducive to a successful ascent of the wall.
Another group went caving, although the cave a group ventured into yesterday, was flooded today! So a larger drier cave was explored by our brave children. Cold air breathing from in the cave produced more condensation than the inside windows of Mr Young's 20 year old BMW on a Winter's day. Thankfully, no trolls were observed.
Archery was the order for the day for a group as well, where Robin Hood's skills were challenged. The children enjoyed various challenges and Mr Young developed a blister trying to get a perfect score of 30 with 3 arrows.
Dinnertime followed and then games in the sports hall, and then an orienteering treasure hunt in the dark.
If the Cookstown crew of children and adults had a band name, it would be 'Contentedly Exhausted'.
We will see you tomorrow!
This is 'Contentedly Exhausted' signing off.
