Cookstown Primary School

'Educating today's children for tomorrow'

Extra Curricular

Cookstown Primary has a long and distinguished tradition of sporting excellence and it is good to know that, at a time when young people are leading increasingly inactive lives, they are still being encouraged to take part in sport at this school.

We offer a wide range of sporting opportunities to all of the pupils enrolled in our school.  Staff and other qualified instructors give the children the opportunity to participate in these activities during and after school hours.

During the year pupils are able to take part in:

Soccer             -           Tri- CountySports Project / Speedwell Tournaments

Netball             -           SELB Area League / Tri-County Sports Project

Hockey            -           Mid-Ulster League & Tournaments (Boys & Girls) /

                                    Tri-County Sports Project

Athletics           -           5 Star Awards / Tri-CountyAthletics Blitz

Swimming         -           IASA Endeavour Awards / Rookie Lifeguards’ Award

Mini Rugby       -           Dungannon RFC Fun Days

Orienteering      -          Speedwell Trust / SELB Area Competition

Badminton

Short Tennis

While we do encourage pupils to compete for places on our teams every child’s unique talents are valued and we encourage mass participation in all of our after school sports clubs. With this in mind we run a squad system in order to give as many children as possible the opportunity to represent their school.

During the summer term the boys and girls take part in the School Athletics Scheme and in June we hold three Sports Days which are always very well supported by parents and friends.

As the school believes in giving children the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitive situations, our staff have become actively involved in the promotion and organisation of a range of sporting activities in the area.

In addition to the sports clubs already mentioned pupils also have the opportunity to participate in many other activities out of school hours:

Dancetastic

Chess

French

Cookery

Scripture Union

Senior Choir

Art & Design

Crafts

Junior Choir

Animation

Green Club

Library

EDUCATIONAL VISITS

As the Board of Governors and staff of CookstownPrimary School believe that excursions enhance the educational process, educational visits designed to enliven the curriculum take place on a regular basis. In the past, children have made overnight visits to the Ulster Folk and TransportMuseum, Killowen and Shanaghmore Outdoor Pursuit Centres, the Horizon Centre in Westport and London, as well as France.

This year Key Stage 1 will visit Belfast Zoo, Speedwell, Springhill, the Ulster American Folk Park, the Argory and the Burnavon, while the P5, 6 and 7 classes will visit the Ulster History Park, Parkanaur, Ulster Museum, Palace Stables, St. Patrick’s Trian, Odyssey, the Cinema and Oxford Island to name but a few.  In addition the P6 and 7 pupils will be taking part in residential  visits, designed to enhance the overall curriculum provision while promoting independence.
